Sikles is one of the largest and most historically rich Gurung villages in Nepal, located in the Madhya (middle) region of the Annapurna Conservation Area, within the Kaski District. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,980 meters, the village sits amidst rolling hills, terraced fields, and panoramic views of the Annapurna, Lamjung Himal, and Machhapuchhre ranges, making it both a scenic and culturally significant destination.
Historically, Sikles has been the cultural and spiritual heart of the Gurung community in this region. The Gurungs are an indigenous ethnic group of Nepal, renowned for their valor, rich traditions, and deep-rooted connection with nature. Traditionally, Gurungs served in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments, and many families in Sikles have a proud history of contributing to the Gurkha legacy. The village’s location along the old trade and pilgrimage routes allowed it to develop a unique identity that blends spiritual, agricultural, and military traditions.
Sikles is not only culturally important but also a living museum of Gurung heritage. The village features traditional Gurung stone houses with slate roofs, communal courtyards, and intricately designed temples and shrines. The community maintains traditional dances, music, and festivals, such as Lhosar (Tamu New Year) and other seasonal celebrations, reflecting the agricultural cycle and spiritual beliefs of the people. Visitors to Sikles often experience authentic homestays, where they witness local craftsmanship, food preparation, and daily life.
The village’s agriculture-based lifestyle has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Terraced farming dominates the landscape, with crops such as millet, maize, barley, and vegetables sustaining the community. The surrounding forests are rich in medicinal plants, wild herbs, and rhododendron trees, which the Gurungs have traditionally used for food, medicine, and spiritual purposes.
Sikles is also historically linked to trading and migration routes connecting the Annapurna and Lamjung regions. In the past, it served as a resting place for traders and pilgrims traveling between high Himalayan passes and the lower valleys. Even today, trekking through Sikles offers travelers not only spectacular mountain vistas but also insight into a community that has preserved its culture, traditions, and natural environment over generations.
In essence, Sikles is a cultural gem of Nepal, offering a perfect combination of mountain scenery, traditional Gurung life, and historical depth. Trekkers visiting Sikles experience a journey back in time, exploring ancient villages, interacting with warm local communities, and witnessing a way of life that continues to thrive amidst the Himalayan landscapes.
Sikles Trek is a short and scenic trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It takes trekkers to the traditional Gurung village of Sikles, offering stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range, rich local culture, terraced farmlands, and beautiful forests.
