The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a high-altitude, culturally rich adventure located in the remote northeastern corner of Nepal’s Manang District. Situated above 4,000 meters, this restricted trekking zone requires special permits due to its proximity to the Tibetan border and its cultural sensitivity.
The trek explores a rain-shadowed Himalayan valley that remained closed to outsiders until 2002. Nar and Phu villages preserve medieval Tibetan culture, traditional lifestyles, and ancient Buddhist heritage with minimal outside influence.
Starting from Kathmandu, the route follows the Annapurna Circuit to Koto via Jagat. From Koto, trekkers enter the Nar Phu restricted area, hiking through narrow gorges, pine forests, and dramatic alpine landscapes toward Meta, Phu, and Nar villages. The trek offers stunning views of peaks such as Himlung Himal (7,126 m), Kang Guru (6,981 m), and Annapurna II (7,937 m).
Cultural highlights include Lama, Ghale, and Gurung communities, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and seasonal festivals like Lhosar and the Yartung Horse Festival. The journey concludes with Kang La Pass (5,320 m), before descending to Ngawal and returning to Kathmandu via Besisahar.
Wildlife & Natural Environment: The valley features diverse alpine ecosystems. Possible wildlife sightings include blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, marmots, red foxes, and rarely, snow leopards. Birdlife includes Himalayan monal, griffon vultures, lammergeiers, and snow partridges.
Key Highlights:
- Remote and culturally preserved Nar and Phu villages
- Restricted area trek with minimal tourist traffic
- Optional side trip to Himlung Himal Base Camp
- Overnight stay at Nar Phedi Monastery
- Crossing Kang La Pass with panoramic Himalayan views
- Rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage and seasonal festivals
