Everest Base Camp & Cho La Pass Adventure Trek via Surke –Trek Overview,
The Everest Base Camp & Cho La Pass Adventure Trek via Surke – 18 Days is an exciting and rewarding Himalayan journey that combines an adventurous overland Jeep drive with one of the most spectacular trekking circuits in the Everest region. This carefully designed itinerary is ideal for trekkers who want to experience the legendary Everest Base Camp, the breathtaking viewpoint of Kala Patthar, the challenging Cho La Pass, and the magnificent Gokyo Valley and Gokyo Lakes in a single unforgettable adventure.
Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp trek, which commonly begins with a flight to Lukla, this itinerary begins with a scenic Jeep drive from Kathmandu to Surke. The overland journey takes you through Nepal’s beautiful countryside, rolling hills, river valleys, traditional villages, and increasingly rugged mountain landscapes before reaching Surke. Starting from Surke provides a more adventurous and road-based approach to the Everest region and allows you to experience a different side of Nepal before beginning the trek.
From Surke, the trekking journey gradually enters the famous Khumbu region. The trail passes through beautiful mountain villages, forests, suspension bridges, and traditional Sherpa settlements before reaching Namche Bazaar, the vibrant commercial and cultural center of the Everest region. Along the way, you have opportunities to experience the unique lifestyle, traditions, Buddhist culture, monasteries, prayer wheels, mani walls, and warm hospitality of the Sherpa people.
After proper acclimatization in Namche and Dingboche, the trek continues toward the higher reaches of the Khumbu Valley. You pass through Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, surrounded by some of the world’s most impressive mountains. As the altitude increases, the landscape changes from lush forests and green valleys to rugged alpine terrain, glaciers, moraines, and dramatic Himalayan scenery.
One of the major highlights of the journey is reaching Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 meters. Standing at the base of the world’s highest mountain is an unforgettable experience. From Base Camp, you can admire the surrounding Khumbu Glacier, towering peaks, and the extraordinary landscape that attracts mountaineers and trekkers from around the world.
The adventure continues with an early-morning ascent of Kala Patthar, reaching approximately 5,545 meters. Kala Patthar is renowned for its spectacular sunrise and panoramic views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and numerous other Himalayan peaks. The viewpoint provides one of the finest perspectives of Mount Everest available to trekkers.
After Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, the route takes a more adventurous turn toward Cho La Pass. Crossing Cho La at approximately 5,420 meters is one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the journey. The trail passes through rugged high-altitude terrain, and conditions can vary according to the season. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy magnificent views of glaciers, snow-covered peaks, and the dramatic Himalayan landscape.
After crossing Cho La Pass, the trail descends toward Thangnak and the beautiful Gokyo Valley. The landscape becomes increasingly spectacular as you approach the famous turquoise Gokyo Lakes, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks and the immense Ngozumpa Glacier. The peaceful atmosphere of Gokyo provides a wonderful contrast to the rugged terrain encountered during the Everest Base Camp and Cho La sections.
A further highlight is the optional early-morning ascent of Gokyo Ri, approximately 5,357 meters above sea level. From the summit, you can enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view of some of the world’s highest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, together with the surrounding glaciers, valleys, and Gokyo Lakes.
After exploring the Gokyo Valley, the trek gradually descends through Dole and Namche Bazaar before continuing toward Surke. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape becomes greener, providing a pleasant transition from the high-altitude Himalayan environment to the lower Khumbu region.
The trekking portion of the journey officially ends at Surke. From Surke, you take a Jeep back to Kathmandu, completing the same overland connection that began your adventure. This creates a distinctive and complete travel experience:
Kathmandu → Surke by Jeep → Everest Base Camp → Kala Patthar → Cho La Pass → Gokyo → Surke → Kathmandu by Jeep
Throughout the trek, our experienced trekking team provides support with route guidance, accommodation arrangements, meals, acclimatization, and general trekking assistance. Our guides are familiar with the Everest region and help ensure that the journey is well organized, comfortable, and safe while also providing valuable insight into local culture, traditions, landscapes, and mountain life.
The itinerary is designed with acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, allowing trekkers time to adjust gradually to increasing altitude. However, this remains a challenging high-altitude trek, particularly because of the long trekking days and the crossing of Cho La Pass. Good physical fitness, proper preparation, a steady pace, and a positive attitude are important for successfully completing the journey.
The Everest Base Camp & Cho La Pass Adventure Trek via Surke – 18 Days is more than simply a trek to Everest Base Camp. It is a complete Himalayan adventure that combines overland travel, high-altitude trekking, Sherpa culture, Buddhist heritage, spectacular mountain scenery, Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass, Gokyo Lakes, and Gokyo Ri.
If you are looking for an adventurous and comprehensive way to explore the Everest region while avoiding the traditional flight-to-Lukla approach, this 18-day Surke-based itinerary offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Himalayas.
Why Choose Our Everest Adventure Trek via Surke?
Why Start the Trek from Surke?
Starting the trek from Surke provides an excellent alternative to the traditional Lukla approach. Instead of beginning with a flight to Lukla, this itinerary reaches Surke by Jeep from Kathmandu and then continues on foot through the beautiful Khumbu region. Starting from Surke allows trekkers to experience a more adventurous and overland approach to Everest while avoiding dependence on a Lukla flight at the beginning of the trek.
Why Travel by Jeep Instead of Flying to Lukla?
One of the distinctive features of this Everest adventure is the Kathmandu–Surke–Kathmandu Jeep journey. Road travel offers an opportunity to experience Nepal’s changing landscapes, from the Kathmandu Valley and green hills to remote mountain settlements.
Using a Jeep also makes the itinerary less dependent on flights to Lukla. Weather conditions in the Everest region can sometimes affect flight operations, so traveling overland to Surke provides an alternative way to reach the trekking route.
Our Exact Trekking Route
Our carefully designed route combines some of the most spectacular destinations in the Everest region:
Kathmandu → Surke by Jeep → Phakding → Namche Bazaar → Tengboche → Dingboche → Lobuche → Everest Base Camp → Kala Patthar → Dzongla → Cho La Pass → Thangnak → Gokyo → Gokyo Ri → Dole → Namche Bazaar → Surke → Kathmandu by Jeep
This route combines the major highlights of the Everest region into one comprehensive adventure, including Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass, Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Lakes, and Gokyo Ri.

Our guides help with:
- Trail navigation and daily trekking arrangements
- Accommodation and meal coordination
- Pace management and acclimatization
- Basic first-aid support
- Monitoring for signs of altitude-related problems
- Communication with local lodges and transportation providers
- Cultural and environmental information
Porters are also arranged according to the group’s requirements. They carry the agreed trekking baggage so that trekkers can concentrate on enjoying the trail and Himalayan scenery.
Accommodation During the Trek
Accommodation is provided in comfortable local teahouses and mountain lodges along the route. Most rooms are arranged on a twin-sharing basis, subject to availability.
The facilities become more basic as you reach higher elevations, but the lodges provide a warm place to rest after each day’s trek. Bathrooms may be shared at some higher-altitude locations, while hot showers and other services may be available for an additional charge.
Meals During the Trek
Meals are provided throughout the trekking journey according to the package arrangement. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner generally include a variety of locally available and familiar options.
Popular trekking meals include dal bhat, noodles, pasta, rice dishes, soups, potatoes, Tibetan-style bread, eggs, and other simple meals. We recommend eating sufficient food and drinking plenty of fluids throughout the trek, particularly at higher elevations.
Trekking Permits and Documentation
The necessary permits and registrations for the Everest region are arranged according to the applicable local and national requirements.
Depending on the current regulations, these may include the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit, and any applicable trekking registration or TIMS requirements.
Our team assists with the necessary permit arrangements so you can concentrate on your trekking experience.
Safety and Acclimatization
Safety is one of the most important aspects of our Everest Adventure Trek. The itinerary includes dedicated acclimatization time at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to allow your body to adjust gradually to increasing altitude.
Our guides monitor the group’s condition throughout the trek and encourage a steady walking pace, adequate hydration, proper nutrition, and sufficient rest.
The trek reaches elevations above 5,500 meters, including Kala Patthar and the challenging Cho La Pass section. Therefore, trekkers should take altitude seriously and follow the guide’s recommendations throughout the journey.
Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.
Who Is This Trek Suitable For?
The Everest Adventure Trek via Surke is designed for physically fit and adventure-oriented trekkers who want a more comprehensive experience of the Everest region.
It is particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine:
- Everest Base Camp
- Kala Patthar
- Cho La Pass
- Gokyo Valley
- Gokyo Lakes
- Gokyo Ri
- Sherpa villages and Buddhist monasteries
- Overland Jeep travel between Kathmandu and Surke
Because the itinerary includes long trekking days, significant elevation gain, and the challenging Cho La Pass crossing, good physical preparation is highly recommended. Previous high-altitude trekking experience is an advantage.
What Makes Our Package Different?
Our Everest Adventure Trek via Surke is different from a standard Everest Base Camp itinerary because it combines an overland approach with an extended high-altitude trekking circuit.
Instead of simply trekking to Everest Base Camp and returning by the same route, you continue beyond Base Camp toward Cho La Pass and the Gokyo Valley, creating a more varied and adventurous journey.
The combination of:
Jeep Adventure + Everest Base Camp + Kala Patthar + Cho La Pass + Gokyo Lakes + Gokyo Ri + Sherpa Culture
makes this an exciting choice for trekkers looking for a complete Everest-region experience.
Most importantly, the trekking section starts at Surke and ends at Surke, while the complete journey operates as:
Kathmandu → Surke by Jeep → Trekking Adventure → Surke → Kathmandu by Jeep.

The Everest Base Camp & Cho La Pass Adventure Trek via Surke is an exhilarating high-altitude trekking adventure in Nepal’s Everest region. The journey combines the legendary Everest Base Camp experience with the challenging crossing of Cho La Pass, offering trekkers an exceptional combination of breathtaking Himalayan scenery, Sherpa culture, ancient monasteries, dramatic glaciers, and remote mountain landscapes. Starting the trek via Surke also provides an alternative approach to the traditional Everest route and allows trekkers to experience quieter trails before joining the main Everest Base Camp trekking route.
The trek is considered challenging and is best suited for trekkers with good physical fitness, endurance, and previous experience with long-distance hiking. The difficulty comes from the high altitude, extended trekking days, steep ascents and descents, rugged terrain, and the crossing of Cho La Pass. Although prior high-altitude trekking experience is beneficial, physically fit and well-prepared beginners can also undertake the trek with proper preparation and professional guidance.
The highest point of the trek is Cho La Pass, approximately 5,420 meters (17,782 feet) above sea level. Everest Base Camp itself is situated at approximately 5,364 meters (17,598 feet). Reaching these elevations requires gradual acclimatization, proper hydration, a steady walking pace, and adequate rest.
The duration depends on the specific itinerary and transportation arrangements. A professionally designed itinerary generally allows sufficient time for acclimatization, trekking, exploration, and the Cho La Pass crossing. The schedule may also include additional contingency time to accommodate changing weather conditions or unexpected delays in the high mountains.
The most favorable seasons for the Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Adventure Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, the weather is generally more stable, visibility is better, and the mountain views are particularly spectacular. The Cho La Pass crossing can become significantly more challenging during winter due to heavy snowfall, ice, and severe weather conditions.
Previous trekking experience is highly recommended but not always mandatory. The trek involves long walking days, considerable elevation gain, and demanding sections, particularly around Cho La Pass. Trekkers should have a good level of cardiovascular fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours a day on uneven mountain terrain. Regular hiking and endurance training before the trip can greatly improve your trekking experience.
Accommodation is generally provided in local teahouses and mountain lodges along the trekking route. These establishments offer basic but comfortable facilities, typically including a bed, blankets, shared or attached bathroom facilities depending on the location, and dining areas. At higher elevations, facilities become more basic due to the remote mountain environment. We recommend carrying a quality sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures.
Meals are generally provided throughout the trekking period according to the selected package. Teahouses offer a variety of nutritious meals, including traditional Nepali dishes such as dal bhat, as well as noodles, rice, pasta, soup, potatoes, vegetables, eggs, bread, and other international options. Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet is particularly important at higher elevations.
Altitude sickness is a potential concern on any high-altitude trek. The itinerary is designed with appropriate acclimatization and gradual elevation gain to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Trekkers should walk at a comfortable pace, stay properly hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, eat regularly, and communicate immediately with the guide if they experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath. Your guide will monitor your condition throughout the trek and advise on the appropriate course of action.
Proper equipment is essential for a safe and comfortable experience. Recommended gear includes good-quality trekking boots, warm and layered clothing, waterproof and windproof outerwear, thermal base layers, trekking trousers, gloves, a warm hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, a sleeping bag, a backpack, trekking poles, a water bottle or hydration system, and personal first-aid essentials. Specialized equipment may be particularly useful for the Cho La Pass section depending on seasonal trail conditions.
Cho La Pass is considered one of the more challenging sections of the Everest region, but it can be crossed safely when weather and trail conditions are favorable and the trek is undertaken with an experienced guide. The route may involve steep, rocky, icy, or snow-covered terrain depending on the season. Our trekking team carefully assesses the conditions and may adjust the itinerary if necessary to prioritize the safety and well-being of trekkers.
Trekkers need the appropriate permits and entry documents required for the Everest region and the areas covered by the itinerary. Depending on the exact route and current regulations, these may include the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and local area permits. Our trekking company will arrange the necessary permits and assist with the required documentation as part of the trip preparation.
Charging facilities and Wi-Fi are available at many teahouses along the route, particularly in larger villages such as Namche Bazaar. However, availability can become limited and more expensive as you ascend to higher elevations. Electricity may also be affected by weather or local conditions. We recommend carrying power banks or portable solar chargers and keeping electronic devices protected from cold temperatures.
This trek is special because it combines the iconic Everest Base Camp adventure with the spectacular and challenging Cho La Pass crossing while approaching the Everest region via Surke. Trekkers experience a remarkable variety of landscapes, from green hills and traditional Sherpa villages to rugged alpine terrain, glaciers, and some of the world’s highest peaks. Beyond the scenery, the trek offers meaningful cultural encounters, Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, and an authentic Himalayan experience. For adventurous trekkers seeking more than the standard Everest Base Camp route, this itinerary provides an unforgettable combination of adventure, culture, nature, and high-altitude exploration.
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek. Your insurance should cover high-altitude trekking at the maximum elevation of your itinerary as well as emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation, if required. Before beginning the trek, carefully check your insurance policy to ensure that it specifically covers trekking at high altitude in Nepal.
ATM and internet facilities are available in some larger settlements, particularly Namche Bazaar, but services become increasingly limited as you travel toward higher elevations. Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity may be available at selected teahouses, although the connection can be slow or unreliable. It is advisable to carry sufficient Nepalese currency and a power bank because charging facilities can become limited and more expensive at higher elevations.
Yes. The Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Trek itinerary can often be customized according to your available time, fitness level, preferred walking pace, acclimatization requirements, and travel preferences. Additional acclimatization or contingency days can also be incorporated where appropriate. A customized itinerary can provide greater flexibility and help ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience.
The Everest Base Camp and Cho La Pass Adventure Trek via Surke is ideal for adventurous trekkers who want to experience more than the classic Everest Base Camp route. From peaceful trails and authentic Sherpa villages to dramatic glaciers, high mountain passes, ancient monasteries, and magnificent Himalayan panoramas, the trek offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Everest region. Reaching Everest Base Camp and crossing Cho La Pass provide two exceptional achievements in a single adventure, making this trek a rewarding choice for experienced and adventure-seeking trekkers.
