Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, established in 2002, is a protected natural area surrounding Kathmandu Valley, covering 159 sq. km with elevations from 1,350 m to 2,732 m at Shivapuri Peak. Natural Beauty & Wildlife

The park is covered with dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron, which bloom spectacularly in spring. Wildlife includes leopards, Himalayan black bears, deer, wild boar, jackals, langurs, and over 300 bird species. This 2–3 day trek in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park offers a perfect mix of nature, wildlife, and spiritual experiences. Hikers will explore dense forests, serene streams, and traditional villages while enjoying panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas. The trek includes visits to Shivapuri Peak, Bagdwar, and Chisapani, combining easy-to-moderate trails suitable for beginners, families, and nature lovers.

The route can be done as a 1-night, 2-day trip or a 2-night, 3-day journey, allowing time for hiking, sightseeing, photography, and meditation. Each day offers scenic landscapes, cultural highlights, and opportunities to experience the tranquility of the park.

Itineraries

Day 1

Kathmandu – Budhanilkantha – Shivapuri Peak – Bagdwar – Okhreni

After breakfast, we drive for about 25 minutes to Budhanilkantha. After obtaining the national park permit, we begin our uphill hike through dense forest toward Shivapuri Peak. While ascending through the jungle, we may observe wildlife such as deer, barking deer, jackals, wild boars, and various species of birds.

After about 4 hours of hiking, we reach the top of Shivapuri Peak. From the summit, we enjoy panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding green hills. Looking north, we can see the magnificent Himalayan ranges including Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. After enjoying the views, we descend for about 30 minutes toward Bagdwar. On the right side of the trail, we visit a mysterious cave where yogis are believed to have meditated thousands of years ago.

We then reach Bagdwar and have lunch there. Bagdwar is the sacred source of the Bagmati River. We explore the yogi hermitage and monastery located in the area. After lunch, we walk to another remarkable natural site where large rocks stand together, and from between the rocks flows a continuous white stream resembling cow’s milk. This water has been flowing for thousands of years. According to Hindu mythology, this place is believed to be the residence of Lord Shiva (Mahadev). Every year on January 16 and 17, a religious fair is held here.

After exploring, we continue walking downhill through the forest for another hour to reach Okhreni, where we stay overnight.

Day 2

Okhreni to chisopani via  – Deurali – Borlang Bhanjyang –  (Approx. 4 hours, 2100m)

After breakfast, we hike uphill for about 45 minutes to reach Deurali View Point. From Deurali, we continue for another 45 minutes to Borlang Bhanjyang, where we enjoy views of the northeastern mountain ranges.

We then descend gradually for about 1 hour to reach Chisopani. After lunch, we stay overnight there. In the afternoon, we take a one-hour walk through the forest to visit a beautiful lake built by a dam and then return to Chisopani.

Day 3

Chisopani – Mulkharka – Sundarijal – Kathmandu 4,5 hours

Early in the morning, we enjoy the sunrise view over the Himalayan ranges. From here, we can observe hundreds of snow-capped peaks including Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Helambu, Gaurishankar, and even the Mount Everest range.

After breakfast, we hike uphill for about one hour to Borlang Bhanjyang. Then we descend through the forest for 2–3 hours via Mulkharka and reach Sundarijal. After lunch at Sundarijal, we drive for about one hour back to Kathmandu.
