The Everest Three High Passes Trek is widely regarded as the ultimate trekking adventure in the Everest region of Nepal. Designed for seasoned trekkers and true mountain enthusiasts, this extraordinary journey combines high-altitude challenge, dramatic Himalayan scenery, and deep cultural immersion into one unforgettable experience. The trek crosses three legendary mountain passes—Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,340m)—making it one of the most demanding yet rewarding trekking routes in the Himalaya.

Your adventure begins with a spectacular flight to Lukla, offering breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped peaks before landing on one of the world’s most iconic mountain airstrips. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing thrilling suspension bridges and passing through pine and rhododendron forests en route to Namche Bazaar, the vibrant heart of the Khumbu region. Namche serves as an important acclimatization stop and offers trekkers a fascinating glimpse into Sherpa life, with traditional markets, mountain lodges, bakeries, and views of Everest on clear days.

As the trek progresses higher, the landscapes grow more dramatic and the cultural richness deepens. Visits to renowned Sherpa villages such as Tengboche, Dingboche, Chhukung, and Lobuche allow time for proper acclimatization and exploration. Tengboche is home to the region’s most important monastery, set against the stunning backdrop of Ama Dablam, while side hikes to Chhukung Ri and surrounding viewpoints reward trekkers with sweeping views of Lhotse, Makalu, Island Peak, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and Baruntse.

The first major challenge, Kongma La Pass, tests both endurance and determination, offering raw alpine scenery, glacier crossings, and unmatched views of the Khumbu Glacier below. The route then leads to the legendary Everest Base Camp (5,364m), where trekkers stand beneath the towering Khumbu Icefall. A sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5,550m) provides one of the closest and most iconic views of Mount Everest, along with panoramic vistas of Nuptse, Pumori, Lobuche Peak, and the surrounding Himalayan giants. The adventure continues across the demanding Cho La Pass, a steep and icy crossing that connects the Everest Base Camp trail with the stunning Gokyo Valley. Here, trekkers encounter the breathtaking turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes, among the highest freshwater lake systems in the world. A climb to Gokyo Ri (5,483m) is often considered the highlight of the trek, offering an unparalleled 360-degree panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Nuptse—a view few trekking routes in the world can match.

The final ascent over Renjo La Pass delivers one last dramatic Himalayan spectacle before descending toward Thame and returning to Namche Bazaar. This section of the trek is quieter and less crowded, offering a more remote and peaceful trekking experience with expansive views and authentic Sherpa villages. Beyond its physical challenge and stunning scenery, the Everest Three High Passes Trek offers deep cultural insight into Sherpa traditions and Tibetan Buddhism. Trekkers encounter monasteries, prayer wheels, mani walls, and colorful prayer flags throughout the journey. Depending on the season, the trek may coincide with important cultural festivals such as Mani Rimdu, Gyalpo Lhosar, Saga Dawa, Dumji, or Janai Purnima at Gokyo Lake, adding a unique spiritual and cultural dimension to the adventure.

Overall, the Everest Three High Passes Trek is the most complete trekking circuit in the Khumbu region, combining Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, three high Himalayan passes, and rich Sherpa culture into one epic journey. It is the perfect choice for trekkers seeking a challenging, scenic, and culturally immersive Himalayan experience that goes far beyond the classic Everest Base Camp trek.

Three Major High Passes (Kongma La Pass, Cho La Pass, & Renjo La Pass)

Kongma La Pass (5,535m): Kongma La Pass is the highest and most demanding of the three high passes on the Everest Three Passes Trek. Rising to 5,535 meters, it connects Chhukung with Lobuche and offers a true high-altitude mountaineering experience. The ascent begins gradually from Chhukung before turning into a steep, rocky climb across scree slopes and rugged ridgelines, with stone cairns marking the route. Depending on the season, snow and ice may be present near the summit, adding to the challenge and adventure. From the top of Kongma La, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Pumori, and the vast Khumbu Glacier stretching far below. The descent toward Lobuche crosses rocky and glacial terrain, demanding careful footing and stamina. Best tackled in spring and autumn, Kongma La is a physically intense yet deeply rewarding crossing, ideal for trekkers seeking a raw and authentic Himalayan challenge.

Cho La Pass (5,420m):  Cho La Pass is widely considered the most technical and challenging section of the Everest Three High Passes Trek. Standing at 5,420 meters, it links Dzongla with Dragnag and serves as the dramatic gateway between the Everest Base Camp route and the Gokyo Valley. The trail involves steep ascents, rocky scrambles, moraine crossings, and a short but demanding glacier section that can be icy even during peak trekking seasons. Reaching the summit delivers a spectacular reward, with sweeping views of Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Everest, and the striking turquoise Gokyo Lakes spread out below. The descent from Cho La is steep and requires careful navigation, especially in cold or windy conditions. This pass demands strong fitness, good acclimatization, and mental resilience, making it a defining highlight of the trek for adventure-focused trekkers.

Renjo La Pass (5,340m):  Renjo La Pass, at 5,340 meters, is the final crossing of the Everest Three High Passes Trek and offers one of the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in the Khumbu region. Connecting the Gokyo Valley with the remote Bhote Koshi Valley, this pass blends high-altitude adventure with cultural exploration. The climb is steep and exposed, with rocky trails and occasional snow patches, and strong winds are common near the summit. From the top, trekkers are treated to a stunning Himalayan panorama featuring Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and Gyachung Kang, along with unforgettable views of the Gokyo Lakes and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier below. The descent leads into quieter Sherpa villages, passing prayer flags, mani walls, and traditional monasteries, offering a peaceful contrast to the stark alpine environment. Renjo La provides a dramatic and rewarding conclusion to the Three High Passes adventure.
